You don't need top-tier gear to get a shot worth keeping โ€” you need a handful of things that actually address the specific problems aurora photography creates: it's dark, it's cold, and you're often out for hours waiting for conditions to develop. Here's what solves each of those problems, in rough priority order.

1. A Camera With a Real Manual Mode

This is the actual requirement โ€” not a specific brand or sensor size. Any camera, including many recent smartphones, that lets you manually control shutter speed, ISO, and focus can produce a real aurora photo. A dedicated mirrorless or DSLR camera will outperform a phone in low light because of its larger sensor, but the gap has narrowed a lot as phone night modes have improved.

If you're buying specifically for aurora and night photography, the sensor traits that matter most are how clean the files look at high ISO and how wide the dynamic range is โ€” both improve with newer sensor generations more reliably than with megapixel count. A higher-megapixel sensor is not automatically better for this; it actually lowers the maximum shutter speed you can use before star trails appear, for reasons covered in the settings guide.

2. A Fast, Wide Lens

This matters more than the camera body for aurora specifically. Look for:

A dedicated wide, fast prime lens (like a 14mm f/1.8 or 20mm f/1.8) is a common upgrade path for people who get serious about this, but the kit zoom that came with your camera is a completely reasonable place to start โ€” you'll just need a slightly higher ISO to compensate for its narrower aperture.

3. A Sturdy Tripod

Non-negotiable. Any exposure longer than about a quarter-second needs the camera to be perfectly still, and you'll be shooting multi-second exposures all night. You don't need an expensive one โ€” you need one that doesn't wobble in the wind and that you can operate with cold, gloved hands. A tripod that's annoying to adjust will get used less carefully in the field, which shows up as blur in your photos.

4. Spare Batteries โ€” Kept Warm

Cold weather drains camera batteries much faster than normal use would suggest, and aurora sessions often run for hours in freezing conditions. Bring at least one spare, and keep it in an inside jacket pocket close to your body rather than in a camera bag exposed to the cold โ€” battery capacity partially recovers once it warms back up, so a "dead" cold battery can come back to life indoors or in a warm pocket.

5. A Headlamp With a Red-Light Mode

You need to see your camera controls, but white light destroys your night vision (and everyone else's, if you're shooting alongside other people) and can ruin a long exposure if it catches the lens. A headlamp with a dedicated red-light mode solves both problems โ€” it's dim enough to preserve night vision while still letting you find buttons by feel.

6. Something to Trigger the Shutter Without Touching the Camera

Pressing the shutter button directly can introduce a tiny amount of shake that shows up as softness in a long exposure. A cheap wired or wireless remote solves this, or use your camera's built-in 2-second self-timer if you don't have one โ€” it costs nothing and works almost as well for stationary shots.

What you don't strictly need

Light pollution filters generally aren't useful for aurora โ€” they're designed for narrowband nebula photography and can shift the aurora's color unpredictably. Star trackers are unnecessary since aurora exposures are already short. And you don't need the newest, most expensive camera body โ€” a five-year-old mirrorless or DSLR with a fast wide lens will outperform a brand-new body paired with a slow kit lens.
